About the Abingdon neighbourhood plan

What is the Abingdon Neighbourhood Plan?

The Abingdon Neighbourhood Plan is being prepared on behalf of all who live and work in the town.  When finalised, it will set out a vision for our town over the next ten to fifteen years building on peoples’ hopes and everyday experiences. Importantly once finalised, the local planning authority will have to take it into account as it considers planning applications and associated matters across the town.

Although the Abingdon Neighbourhood Plan is an initiative of Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council it is being put together by a steering group of volunteers.

This steering group is being assisted by Feria Urbanism, an urban design and urban planning practice based in Bournemouth, with extensive experience of supporting the creation of neighbourhood plans in other towns like ours.

Three New Topics Added July 2022

Following a very positive response to the first three topics for consultation on the Abingdon Neighbourhood Plan, we have now added three further topics for consultation. These are:

  • Travel, access and movement

  • Business and employment

  • Families and young people

This consultation will be running until midnight on Friday 9th September.

Town Centre Coordination

Vale of White Horse District Council is currently reviewing the land and properties it owns in Abingdon town centre. This is so it can set out its possible intentions and aspirations for them in the future but also as part of a wider review of the town centre so that any decisions the Vale makes enhances its vitality and environment.

The Vale is working with Abingdon Town Council’s Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group to ensure all of the work both councils are doing in relation to the town is properly aligned.  It is also committed to ensuring the whole community of Abingdon is part of the process and will be undertaking further engagement in due course.

This work will represent a real opportunity for partners, local organisations and interested residents to contribute to get the best outcomes for the people of Abingdon. The Vale will be publicly sharing the initial outcomes of this work, in the coming months.
